Exploring old, derelict places is one of my favorite things; the prickly feeling that danger could be around the next corner, imagining the people who used to fill the space, feeling like there’s a secret that you’ve been let in on.

San Francisco is full of these kinds of places – in college, my work was mostly large-format ‘landscapes’ of the abandoned warehouses  around the China Basin waterfront.  When I was recently hired to photograph the Old San Francisco Mint, I could not say yes fast enough.
